Fall is the perfect time to bring warmth and handmade charm into your home. One of our favorite ways to do that? Crocheting your own pumpkin!
This easy project is great for all skill levels, customizable in size and color, and adds that perfect cozy touch to your seasonal decor.
Why This Plan Works
- Beginner-friendly: Uses only basic stitches.
- Customizable: Adjust size and yarn type easily.
- Quick to make: Great for a weekend craft.
- Perfect for gifting or decorating: A handmade touch for autumn.
- Minimal supplies needed: You probably already have them!
What You Will Need
- Yarn of your choice
- Crochet hook that matches your yarn
- Stuffing (fiberfill or scrap yarn)
- Yarn needle
- Optional: Cinnamon stick, twig, or crocheted stem
Step 1: Start With the Chain
Begin your pumpkin by chaining 21 stitches. This sets the width of your pumpkin. Want it bigger or smaller? Just add or subtract chains.
Step 2: Lay the Foundation
Starting in the second chain from your hook, single crochet across the row. When you reach the end, chain one and turn. This row forms the base of your pumpkin’s texture.
Step 3: Create the Texture
From here on, work single crochets in the back loop only for each row. This creates the ribbed effect that mimics a real pumpkin. At the end of each row, chain one and turn.
Repeat this step for about 40 rows. A helpful formula: (Number of chains – 1) x 2. So with 21 chains, aim for 40 rows.
Step 4: Form the Body
Thread your yarn needle and stitch the short ends of your rectangle together. You’ll end up with a tube—this will be your pumpkin’s body.
Step 5: Close the Bottom
Use your yarn needle to weave around one open end of the tube and pull tight to close. This becomes the pumpkin’s base. Tie off securely.
Step 6: Add the Stuffing
Stuff your pumpkin evenly with fiberfill or scrap yarn. You want it full but not overstuffed—aim for a nice round shape.
Step 7: Seal the Top
Weave your needle around the open top edge and pull tight to close. This seals in the stuffing and completes the pumpkin shape.
Step 8: Add Character
To create pumpkin segments, thread a long piece of yarn from top to bottom and pull gently. Do this 5–6 times, spacing evenly around the pumpkin, to form the classic ridged look.
Step 9: Insert the Stem
Add your finishing touch! Insert a cinnamon stick, twig, or crocheted stem into the top. Stitch in place if needed.
Step 10: Enjoy!
Your crochet pumpkin is ready! Try making a few in different sizes or colors for a festive fall display.
Note: Keep your stitches even and tension relaxed—this helps your pumpkin keep its shape and texture.
